BOX OFFICE REPORT: BOLLYWOOD IS MOST CERTAINLY IN THE MOOD FOR SEX COMEDIES
REVENUE EARNED FROM INDIA THEATRICAL AFTER DEDUCTING TAX
What Ekta Kapoor attempted, Indra Kumar did a lot better. Ekta’s Kyaa Kool Hai Hum (2005) and its sequel — Kyaa Super Kool Hain Hum (2012) — made risque content fairly acceptable.
However, Indra Kumar and Ashok Thakeria unabashedly upped the sex quotient in their Grand Masti and they even managed to pull off a box office winner. The adult comedy, starring Vivek Oberoi, Riteish Deshmukh and Aftab Shivdasani, got the fourth biggest opening of 2013. Made at a cost of 19 crore with another 12 crore spent on prints and advertising, Grand Masti looks to be a hit. The sex comedy is here to stay.
Vikram Bhatt’s Horror Story, which collected around 2.59 crore, may just manage to break even. Though it found no appreciation from the critics, it found some patronage among people who like horror genre. However, the Randeep Hooda-Naseeruddin Shah thriller John Day didn’t start well.
Of the last week’s releases, Zanjeer met with a disastrous fate. After the slow start, it crashed. Shuddh Desi Romance will be a winner. The film continued to find patronage through the first week and second weekend. Chennai Express collected something to the tune of 208 crore in its entire run. And it now has a clear lead of around 5-odd crore over 3 Idiots, which makes CEthe No 1 box office earner of all times.
