It’s been screened at several films festivals and now the story of Assam’s Mayong village is available on DVD. The film, titled Mayong: Myth/Reality, captures the story of the magical village of Mayong on film. The village, situated in the Marigaon district of Assam, is popularly known as the Land of Black Magic. It has also earned the sobriquet of ‘Indian Capital of Black Magic and Witchcraft’.
The place attracts many tourists annually because of its uniqueness and there are several folklores associated with the place. Legends say that the name Mayong comes
from the word Maya since it is considered the ‘land of illusion’.
The documentary aspires to bring alive
story of Mayong using historical and archaeological facts, legends about the place, the efforts to preserve its heritage by the locals, and its potential to become a tourist place. In the film, there is an instance, where the locals cure a man of his backache with just magic. One just looks at it in disbelief that something like this can exist in today’s times.
