Bollywood offers for India’s superbike racer
Alisha Abdullah, India’s 23-year-old racing champion, chats with Bombay Times
One hears you’ve had offers from Bollywood before... Yes, I did get a couple of offers, some from the South too. But I will wait for the right person, the right script and then go ahead.
How did your tryst with racing begin? My dad RA Abdullah is a former national bike champion. He gifted me a 600 cc superbike on my 18th birthday and simply said, ‘You’re going to race’.
You were disappointed after coming seventh in the national karting championship held in Hyderabad. How do you plan to win this year? I love a good challenge, especially when it comes from a guy. It makes me work really hard. I might not succeed at the first attempt, but for sure the game is on!
Is zipping around at 120kmph scary? Well, 120 is like having a chip out of the whole packet. The fastest I have raced on my 600cc bike is 265kmph during one of my practice sessions. I love speed and I am born to do it!
Are you looking forward to the all-woman superbike race to be held in Spain this October? Yes, very much. I am really happy to be the first Indian woman racer to make my country proud in a male-dominated sport.
Are your guy friends intimidated by you? Not really. A lot of guys look up to me in terms of fitness. I have quite a few dedicated fans who are always there to support me.
At 23, when other girls spend a lot of time in a mall or at the movies, you must be busy practising at the race track. Do you feel like you miss out? I train really hard. Even at the gym I make sure I can beat a guy by doing more push-ups than him. I do get some time to hang out or catch a movie. But I feel guilty as it cuts into my gym time and also affects my diet. I try and avoid distractions as much as possible. If there is no sacrifice, you can’t achieve anything.
