A bond for reel!
On Teachers Day today, After Hrs takes a look at some of the films that have highlighted the teacher-student relationship
Bollywood may be obsessed with it's set of love stories and off late the maar-dhaad flicks, but B-Town's affair with the student-teacher relationship just doesn't end. Every few months Bollywood churns out a film that's based on the teacher-student relationship. Right from the mythological films of the past era to the historical period and from the black and white era and now to the newer breed, the guru-shishya tradition has always been celebrated on the big screen. The recent years itself have seen a variety of films being churned out that explore various aspects exploring this bond.
Says film expert Taran Adarsh, "Bollywood has always been inspired by the guru-shishya relation. From the vedic times till date, films have shown this bond based in various circumstances and situations. Earlier the movies had stories that spoke on the poor student whose life changes for good with the help of his teacher. Or a poor teacher and rich arrogant students who learn good behaviour due to the teacher, like in Parichay. Now the films are more stylised than before."
Talking about the films that have made a deep impact, analysts share that Jagriti was one of the first films based on student-teacher relation back in 1954. Some of the others over the years include Imtihaan, Sir, Rockford, Mohabattein, Main Hoon Na, Black, Chak De!, Taare Zameen Par, Paathshala, 3 Idiots, Stanley ka dabba and the recently released Aarakshan. But there are limitations to this subject too. Explaining this, trade analyst Amod Mehra says that movies on the student-teacher relationship can't be made very often. "It becomes difficult to add variations after a certain point. So we have such movies made in regular intervals. Also right from Jagriti to now the topic is always well experimented," adds Amod.
He furthers states that, "Such films always have an audience as they are based on values and morals. They not only provide entertainment but also have a positive message. Since education is an important aspect of life, films based on it will always be made with modern day vision, depicting current circumstances." What's more, in the West too there have been quite a few films based on this bond.
