AMBIENCE
The Taj Mahal Palace & Tower is a landmark hotel in Mumbai and the restaurants it houses have been a regular haunt for many families. Its Chinese restaurant Golden Dragon has always been my favourite and I visited it after a very long time. When the 26/11 terrorist attacks shook up the hotel, I could only imagine what could have happened to the people sitting there enjoying their meal. It could have happened to me.
When I stepped into Golden Dragon this time, the first thing that struck me was the change in its décor, so there was a sense of unfamiliarity. But once I dug into my food, I knew I was back in the good, ol' Golden Dragon. For any restaurant the cuisine is what makes it distinct. And amongst all the Chinese specialty restaurants, this place has always maintained its numero uno spot on my list. For me, Golden Dragon is a favourite because it brings back to the senses, the flavour that you're familiar with. It has that perfect balance of Indian tastes and traditional authenticity and you are able to segregate one flavour from the other.
ORDER
We settled for the regular hot and sour soup because they do it the best. You can go terribly wrong with hot and sour soup… the corn can be off, the soya may not be great. But here, it is perfectly made. I also love the dimsums here, they are simply divine. My meal at Golden Dragon is incomplete with the dimsums. We order egg fried rice next. Trust me, it's so good that I could eat it without a side dish alongside. We move on the Chicken Supreme Chilly Oyster next. A chef recommended dish, the garlic blended beautifully well with the dark chicken and the flavours were amazing. And if you're looking for gorging on fresh prawns, look no further. Prawns do not get fresher than the ones served here. The Crispy prawn butter garlic is a must try. So is the Steamed sea bass, sizzled ginger, chilly and spring onion that we tucked in and loved immensely.
For desserts, we go for Chilled Rambuthan, which is basically this interesting lychee served in a big glass with your choice of ice cream. The taste lingered on long after.
SERVICE
The service here is impeccable, equipped with extremely courteous and polite staff. I must mention that I do miss the old Golden Dragon, because of my attachment to its old décor. But the new décor is equally beautiful… what with its open kitchen making it a live experience. The lighting is mellow thus creating a beautiful, warm ambience.
VERDICT
The best part, however, is to watch people enjoying a good meal here. It's good to see that people are back here with no fear.
