Clash? Averted!
Actors Shahid Kapoor, Imran Khan and Ranbir Kapoor avoida much-awaited face-off with each other at the BO by shuffling the release dates of their films
Initially, it was actors Imran Khan and Ranbir Kapoor who were to battle it out at the BO with their films slated for a release yesterday. Then Shahid Kapoor was expected to join the fray as his own film Mausam too got postponed to September 9 from the earlier date of July 22. Though mausam avoided a clash then with the Ajay Devgn starrer Singham, it was promising to be even more interesting to see the young turks battle it out on September 9. But while the audience was gearing for this interesting takkar between the young stars, industrywallahs were hoping that this clash would be avoided as it would be bad for business, with all the promising films eating into each other's business.
Call it sheer luck, a clever marketing move or simply need of the hour, but Ranbir's Rockstar directed by Imtiaz Ali was pushed to a much later date in November, while Pankaj Kapur's directorial debut Mausam's release too got postponed by a week. As a result, Imran saw his film in which he stars with Katrina Kaif becoming the only release this Friday.
According to a source, "Rockstar getting postponed was always much expected as September 9 was only a tentative date of release. Also they would have required that much time for marketing and Ranbir too was busy juggling Rockstar with Barfee." Another insider reveals that Shahid's film too was pushed by a week to gain some time for marketing. "Today marketing is the key and no filmmaker wants to compromise on that aspect of the film, even if it means pushing the dates. Anyways the release dates are often subject to changes, so it's not surprising," the insider adds.
Trade analysts say that both Mausam and Rockstar being postponed was a smart thing to do, as it would work in the favour of not only the two films, but also Imran's film. "All three films are one of the much-awaited releases, so had they released on the same day, they would have definitely eaten into each other's business and affected footfalls in theatres," explains trade analyst Taran Adarsh.
"All the three are strong names and have their own fan base, but a clash would've had a not so favourable effect on the business for sure," added another veteran exhibitor. Well, whatever the reason may be, the audience is not complaining, neither are the stars!
