Living films gig-size
Bollywood's found a new way to promote their films — throw a concert and perform live
Actors Katrina Kaif and Imran Khan recently performed at a live gig as part of the promotional activity for their upcoming film and plan to perform at several more across the country. Not too long back Katrina was also part of a live promotional concert where actors Hrithik Roshan and Farhan Akhtar performed during their last release Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara. Actor Salman Khan too had planned one such live concert with actors Zarine Khan and Asin during Ready, where he was planning to dance on several of his tracks. Inspired by this marketing strategy actor Aamir Khan too had worked out a similar rock show during the release of Delhi Belly. And they are not the only ones. An increasing number of filmmakers and actors are now looking at such live gigs whether in malls or pubs as a part of their promotional tactic for their upcoming films, considering the huge hits these concerts have turned out to be. Actor Ranbir Kapoor is expected to be a part of some live gigs that the filmmakers are apparently planning to promote their film Rockstar, while actor Shahid Kapoor was planning a flash mob in New York for Mausam.
Filmmaker and actor Farhan Akhtar reasons that fans get to see their stars live and for many it's a huge draw, which helps create a buzz for the film. "Plus there's a different energy involved altogether at such live shows and even we enjoy bonding with our fans directly. It's a different experience altogether," he says.
Katrina agrees, "For me it's more about having fun. I enjoyed performing live and am game for more," she says. As for the gigs helping the film, she adds, "The audience would like to see you on screen once a connect is formed."
Though trade analysts too give this a thumbs up, they do point out that holding live concerts to promote a film is not exactly a new concept of marketing in Bollywood. "But yes now an increasing number of stars too are becoming a part of it. This has added a new charm to such shows," says trade analyst Taran Adarsh, who recalls actors Aishwarya Rai and Vivek Oberoi crooning and dancing at one such gig while promoting their film Kyun… Ho Gaya Na, which had proven to be quite a hit with the crowds several years back. "Now once again, such gigs are helping generate a lot of buzz around the film which definitely works in a film's favour. It's just one of the more innovative tools that's working in marketing," adds Taran.
