Twice the inspiration

Actor Sonam Kapoor has not one, but two teachers in Bollywood —filmmaker Sanjay Leela Bhansali and actor-filmmaker Pankaj Kapur

For actor Sonam Kapoor, her first director Sanjay Leela Bhansali is no less than a teacher. Though the two apparently had a fall-out after the actress made some comments about the director on a TV talk show, things have cooled off since then and Sonam is now only praises for the filmmaker who directed her in her debut film Saawariya.

"The film wasn't easy to make, but Sanjay just held our hands through the entire journey and there was so much that we learned along the way, thanks to him. I may not call him and wish him a Happy Teacher's day, but he will always be a special teacher for me," shares the young star.
"Whatever inhibitions we had as newcomers we could overcome largely because of him. In fact I remember there were days when he would lose his cool, but then in hindsight we would realise his actions are often justified. He is so passionate about films that it's hard not to share the same love for films as him," says Sonam.

The actor also credits him for developing a taste for classic Hindi cinema. "I've always been an avid film watcher, but it was Sanjay who kind of re-introduced me to the classics like the Bimal Roy kind of cinema and made me look at them from a different perspective altogether," she says. "As a filmmaker, I don't think anyone pampers the stars the way he does. Also watching him work so dedicatedly is always an inspiration," she adds.
In fact, the actor also considers director Pankaj Kapur her teacher for the same reason. "Pankaj sir is such an institution in himself. Till date I think he keeps raising the bar higher with his performances. I think he too is an inspiration for any actor. The best thing is that he puts you at so much ease that he doesn't let you get intimidated by the powerhouse talent that he is," says Sonam.
