Marigolds go by many local names, including Holli Gold, Mary Bud, Gold Blooms and Bull’s Eye. They do not survive if cut. The Marigold flower petals are edible. It’s also used in salads to add colour, and does not smell sweet like other flowers. 

The October birth flower mainly signifies good luck, charm and comfort, along with affection and grace. It also symbolises sympathy and gratitude. The early Christians also referred to it as Mary’s Gold, and placed it near the statues of the Virgin Mary. It’s referred to by many names, including Calendula, which has Latin roots. The Latin word ‘Kalendae’ means first day of the month.
