'Lady GaGa transformed our signature sari drapes'

..says couturier Tarun Tahiliani about dressing up the pop sensation recently

Several Indian fashion designers have been dressing up international celebrities of late. And recently pop star Lady GaGa chose to wear a look created by designer Tarun Tahiliani for her debut performance in India. The designer feels that it's her unique and quirky sense of fashion that makes her a global style icon.
Talking about the quirk queen, Tarun says, "I got a call from Mehr Rampal and she asked me to send some looks to her for Lady GaGa. I sent her quite a few options and then GaGa decided to wear this white body suit and kept aside all the dresses that she had got with her. In fact, she completely transformed our signature sari drapes — first into a sarong drape, then she threw the pallu off and eventually performed in the body suit with fish net stockings and Louboutins. It was her creative genius that made five different looks out of one of our pieces."

So does he think that Indian fashion has come a long way? He agrees, "I do. I think fashion in India has evolved from just embellishment to more emphasis on fit, finish and construct. Fashion now is more about style and individuality. It makes me happy to see more and more Indians embracing that. What makes me even happier is finding westerners embracing Indian fashion and making it their own!"
The bridal season is also on at the moment. So what is the one most important factor a bride should keep in mind while choosing the wedding outfit? "Each bride is unique and the key here is comfort and individuality and the bride should do what feels right for her," adds Tarun.
The designer feels that bridal wear and couture pieces are his strong points. "We are now looking at being more focused on ready-to-wear. We are also witnessing a huge growth in our men's wear," says Tarun, adding that he'd try and tap into international markets next.
