Most of the newcomers this year failed to make as much of an impact as their predecessors last year

Zarine Khan

Nargis Fakhri
Ranveer Singh

Right from Sonakshi Sinha to Ranveer Singh to Ali Zafar, Rajat Bharmecha, Shraddha Kapoor, Zarine Khan — the year 2010 in Bollywood saw several newcomers make a rather impactful debut as actors. This year it has a slightly different tale to tell. Though the number of debutante actors has shot up, most have failed to create the same ripples as their predecessors, including the latest entrant Chirag Paswan and Nargis Fakhri, who despite their good looks and a dream debut fell short of expectations. In fact, most of the ones who did manage to impress B-wood or went on to become a part of this year's hit films are either already popular down South or have a TV background and so are already known faces.
"Yes, apart from the newcomers here who are already stars down South, like Rana Daggubatti or Kajal Agarwal, none of them so far have managed to be labelled 'star material' as such. In fact, given the high number of actors having made a debut, it's surprising that not many have been able to make an individual impact, even though their films have clicked at the BO," admits trade analyst Taran Adarsh, but adds that some of them did show promise and it would be too premature to write them off. "Some of them could do with better direction, while others we don't know yet if that was just a flash in the pan or will be able to sustain the high in their graphs in future too.
Trade analyst Amod Mehra agrees, "Sure, there have been hits with newcomers this year and some impressive debuts even though the films have failed at the BO, but unlike the last year, none of the debutants have made that big an impact where it's safe to say that a star is born," opines Mehra.
"What has been working this year are the films more than a particular actor when it comes to newcomers, including films like the surprise hit Pyar Ka Punchnama or Mujhse Fraanship Karoge," shares another trade insider, adding that given the high number of debutants this year — more than 35 —one expected a far tagda competition among them this year, but that doesn't seem to be the case.
A top filmmaker too feels that most of the newcomers, who are making their first big screen debut have failed to impress the fraternity. "But among them, the girls have definitely fared better. They will also have a better chance of getting a second opportunity as they don't usually carry the film on their shoulders. It's tougher for the guys, as it will be difficult to find filmmakers who might want to risk the film with them as heroes, if they failed to impress in their debuts," he says.
