Hello Germany

India celebrates the 60th anniversary of Indo-German diplomatic relations through a 15-month long line-up of cultural events

It's a unique event to mark the remarkable cooperation between Germany and India in the fields of politics, economy, science, culture and education achieved during the past decades. 'Germany and India 2011-2012: Infinite Opportunities' entails a fifteen-month long celebration of the year of Germany in India that highlights collaborative programmes and projects reflecting different facets of urban life and development such as mobility, architecture, energy planning, art and cultural infrastructure.
The first concert on classical music will see the performance of the famous string quartet, Minguet Quartett. The second is a concert by youth jazz orchestra, BuJazzO which will be a cultural exchange as German Jazz meets Carnatic music. Dr Marla Stukenberg, Director, Goethe-Institute/Max Mueller Bhavan Mumbai, explains, "The year of Germany in India aims to highlight the 60th anniversary of Indo-German diplomatic relations. The fifteen-month collaborative celebration provides a shared platform to strengthen and expand Germany's positive image in India." There are several events lined up in the months to come that include art exhibitions, musical extravaganza, concerts, science and business conferences and more. The highlights, as Marla, points out, "The centrepiece of the programme series is the 'Mobile Space', a set of modern multi-purpose pavilions, designed especially for 'The year of Germany in India' by renowned German artist Markus Heinsdorff. The pavilions combine state of the art steel and textile technologies, from both countries, thereby creating a symbiosis of art, architecture and technology. There's also a lighthouse project with The German Film Orchestra Babelsberg performing the compositions of Oscar-winning musician AR Rahman. The five-city concert tour will also have contributions from the young choir of Rahman's KM Music Conservatory in Chennai and renowned soloists from all over India. With this concert tour we celebrate 100 years of Indian cinema, as it was in this year that the first Indian silent film Pundalik was released and we also celebrate 100 years of The German Film Orchestra Babelsberg. So expect a musical extravaganza in January 2012." In February, there will be a multimedia exhibition in Mumbai— 'Examples to follow! Expeditions in Aesthetics and Sustainability' that will be accompanied by a series of guided tours, curator's talk, workshops and lectures.
Marla adds, "The thematic focus is CitySpaces — StadtRaume, a subject links directly to current transformation processes in India and Germany. The programme will broach the implications of rapid urbanisation and challenges posed by the fast changes in cities of both countries today. Issues like mobility, energy, sustainable city development, architecture, cultural spaces, education and urban art will be prominently featured touching genres such as performing and visual arts, science, education, technology and business, etc. All the cultural projects also aim at reflecting the collaborative Indo-German bond and contribute tremendously through their artwork to the thematic focus." The Indo-German programmes across India will be on till November next year.
