Teal, the new black?
Style mavens suggest that the deep blue-green shade is being used extensively right now. Be it clothing, shoes, apparels or jewellery, the colour is dominating fashion parades
The party circuit seemed to have found an alternative to the classic black — a partygoer's favourite. They're now opting for a hue that's a cross between green and blue called teal, the scene-stealer this season. Celebs are spotting this colour, and it seems to be manifesting on more than just clothing.
Says designer Ridhi Mapxencar, "Teal looks great on Indian skin and that's the best thing about it. It's perfect for both summer and winter, and is definitely the new black!" Fashion designer Maheka Mirpuri seconds that. "It's fresh, trendy and different. I have used a lot of it in my collections — kaftan dresses, corset blouses, chiffon long skirts, etc. It can be opulent and dramatic," says Maheka.
Calling the hue "striking and unquestionably unique", fashion designer Archana Kochhar adds, "Teal can be a dynamic colour choice for gowns, lehengas and saris. It evokes the tropics and the richness of the greens and blues."
Teal is in vogue not just in dresses but also in shoes, jewellery, bags and make-up range. Shoe designer Payal Kothari of Veruschka says, "I used the teal and glitter look for my LFW show. It looks lovely in satins," says Payal. One can pair it with orange or pink rose for that extra glam factor, she recommends.
Engagement rings in teal have soared in demand, thanks to Duchess Kate who was passed on Princess Diana's sapphire ring! "Coloured stones like turquoise, sapphire and emeralds go beautifully with western wear like gowns. Teal is very royal and teams well with diamonds and white gold," explains Mahesh Jagwani, MD Mahesh Notandass.
Leading fashion brands are also introducing make-up in teal shades - from eye-liners to nail paints. Says a representative from Mango, "Teal is a strong blue toned green that livens ocean depths and the colour of the sky. In fact teal has been identified by the fashion experts as the colour of the year."
A spokesperson for Inglot adds, "Teal is great to interrupt the beiges and reds. The green undertones are soothing. Teal make-up combined with silver and gold makes for a great evening look."
